Advanced Cinematography:
Location Lighting

A Giant Leap in Cinematography Education

Leverage knowledge & technology to up your cinematography skills.

This course is the pinnacle of my experience as a cinematographer and a content provider in the film industry.

From a decades worth of on set experience to nearly 300 episodes of the Wandering DP Podcast I have set out on a journey to develop a system for commercial cinematography. This course is the summation of that 10 year journey.

When I started developing this course I went through a number of variations before finally realizing that the best way to share the knowledge and experience I had benefited from in my own career was to lay it ALL out.

I wanted to create a course that showed exactly how I look at a job, the world, and the profession.

Open source the system so people that want to build on the information don't have to spend the years I did on constructing the foundation.

In Advanced Cinematography: Location Lighting, you and I will walk through an entire commercial production like a DP does in the real world.

The course is structured so that we analyze every aspect a cinematographer is responsible for and all along the way I share my style, areas I've learned to excel in, and what to expect from collaborators throughout the process.

This is the future of cinematography education.

I've been a cinematographer since 2009 and have shot 100s of commercial projects over that time.

Throughout the course of landing, prepping, and shooting those jobs I have learned a lot about the different approaches a DP can take in their role.

And over the past few years, I've shared that knowledge of how to shoot commercials in over 200 episodes of The Wandering DP Podcast. Every week I receive emails from people who have found the podcast and immediately improved their work because of it.

But in the process, I've also heard from many DPs and people just starting out in the industry that they need more than just technical help. They need guidance on the entire commercial production process and how the knowledge they have can be best utilized. They need a more complete road map of every phase of the process so they can maximize their efficiency and improve their results.

That is why I created Advanced Cinematography: Location Lighting, to fast track aspiring cinematographers by teaching them my workflows (both good and bad) for maximizing the potential of my projects.

This course was designed to share my specific style of commercial cinematography. If you're familiar with the podcast or the youtube channel but want to see how the ideas I mention actually work on a set and you want a step-by-step guide on how to do it than this course is for you.

  • The Entire System. In this course I lay out everything I use on my day to day jobs encompassing all of the aspects of the Framework. If you want to implement the Framework in your own jobs this is the best place to see it in action.
  • Lighting in Real Time. The single biggest benefit of taking a course like this is seeing the changes and lighting decisions in real time as we build, light, and shoot the job in real time on virtual sets with virtual cameras. No more trying to decipher still images after the fact. You see the shots being built rather than deconstructed.
  • Prep to Shoot Day. No stone is left unturned in this course. We go over my approach to prep, location scouting multiple options, blocking, tech scouts, the schedule, and finally the actual set on shoot day.
  • Personal Experience. This is not a course on how to get the best images or the become the greatest cinematographer. This course lays out my personal system that took me years to develop. I hope you can take it and build on top of it to advance your own work.

Across eight distinct course stages, you’ll learn all about:

  • The Numerous Roles of a DP: Each production is different and knowing where you services are best utilized is a skill that comes with practice and experience. Get both first hand in this course as you watch over my shoulder during each step in the process.
  • Master the Workflow: I will show you how I work on set to get the most out of my images and why I use a very specific order when it comes to lighting day exterior scenes.
  • Build Confidence & Deliver: Once you see how a set operates and can pick up the tips offered in this course you will have the confidence necessary to push your cinematography to new heights.
  • Maximize Your Results: Learn how to make sure you are set up for success. 99% of a cinematographer's job is done before they walk on set. Understand where your time and energy is best used to be certain you are getting the most out of your work.

Advanced Cinematography: Location Lighting is made for cinematographers looking to build their tool kit for commercial productions by looking over the shoulder of someone who is doing it day in and day out.

This course will help show you what it is like to work in the modern commercial world. Things move very fast and you don't always get a second chance in this business.

I have always tried to share my methodology and the results of my experiments but something has always been missing. It just isn't possible to go into all the detail necessary to explain cinematography in a single podcast episode or youtube video.

With this course I wanted to leave no stone left unturned. Anything I do on a commercial is laid out in this course. You will understand the "Why" behind the choices which will give you a better understanding of the "How".

Make sure you are prepared and can show the world what you can do by gaining on set experience with a professional all at your own pace.
